What From Ashes is About

Dana and Nicola meet at an Air BnB on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia in the summer of 2015. Dana is a housekeeper and Nicola is a guest. They instantly become good friends, but life takes them in different directions.

Five years later...

Dana is a rising star fitness coach when the lockdowns force her to shut down her fitness classes. All attempts to re-launch her fitness career online fail. Desperate to numb the pain of her sudden loss, she turns to photography, a long-time passion of hers.

Nicola, award-winning photographer and wedding planner, loses her business when the world economy shuts down. To make matters worse, her husband -- the love of her life – decides to walk out, leaving her alone and shattered. But rather than let his betrayal completely engulf her, Nicola decides to expand her photography skills outside of the wedding realm.

Both women reconnect with each other over social media, and photography is the very thing that rekindles their friendship. They meet up near Pemberton late that spring. Nicola starts her own photography business while Dana finds her passion in gardening, which takes her on a very different career path, albeit one that complements Nicola’s photography business.

Despite the strict social distancing mandate, both women are given a second chance at love: Nicola meets Jake, a world-renowned photographer, and Dana meets Chris, an established landscape designer who discovers her eye for detail. Handsome and naturally outgoing, it doesn’t take much effort for these men to sweep Dana and Nicola off their feet.

Both Dana and Nicola feel like they’ve been blessed, but they soon discover that their ability re-define love, happiness and success amidst chaos is not so easy.

My Reason For Writing From Ashes

Hello, I am Deanna Proach, the author of From Ashes. A good part of From Ashes is based on my own experiences throughout the COVID pandemic. But this isn’t just my story. This is a story that I’m sure all of you can relate to on some level. Because we’ve all lost something within these past few incredibly tough years, be it a job, a business, or a relationship.

However, the best things come after the storm. At least, I’d like to see it that way.

On that note, I’d like to mention that this is a work of serial fiction and a work-in-progress. I am publishing this story chapter by chapter as I write, edit and proofread it. As of now, this newsletter is entirely free for anyone to read and make comments.
